Foundation stitches, also know as Chainless Foundation stitches, have been my ‘best friends’. I use them on a lot of my projects. They not only save time of having to count chains, I’m sure that no chains will be skipped.
Here is a photo tutorial for the Foundation Single Crochet – FSC.

Step 1 – Chain 2Note: (where the stitch marker is. That’s the loop behind the 1st chain, and that’s where we will insert the hook. This is just my preference. You could insert your hook directly into the chain)
Step 2- insert hook into loop behind first chain, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook)
Step 3- yarn over and pull through 1st loop (2 loops on hook)Note: (pulling through that first loop creates a foundation chain for the SC. The arrow points to the chain just made)
4- yarn over and pull through 2 loops (1st FSC made). Note: (the arrow. It points to the 2 loops that make the SC. The stitch marker is in the foundation chain where you will work the next FSC)
to make another FSC:
Step 1- insert hook into foundation chain from previous stitch
Step 2- yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook)
Step 3- yarn over, pull through 1st loop (foundation chain is made for second SC. 2 loops on hook)
Step 4- yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2nd FSC made)
repeat steps 1-4 to make more foundation single crochet.
